TDP-43 nuclear pathology occurs early, prior to cytoplasmic aggregation & preceding symptom onset, suggesting cytoplasmic gain of toxic function & not nuclear loss-of-function, is the primary molecular correlate of clinical manifestation in #ALS #MND🧵3/6 doi.org/10.1007/s00401…

Take a look at our recently published TDP-43 RNA aptamer findings. Full SOP can be found in this link: doi.org/10.17504/proto… Get in touch if you are interested in collaborating with us using RNA aptamers 😎🤩🤓

We're excited to be able to present our new work published in Acta Neuro. We show that our TDP-43 aptamer can detect an earlier form of TDP-43 pathology than is possible using antibodies in post-Mortem tissue. Chemistry Edinburgh Institute for Regeneration and Repair doi.org/10.1007/s00401…

We welcome this development from Prof Jenna Gregory. Whilst not currently a diagnostic test - having been conducted on post-mortem brain tissue - it does provide an exciting advance with potential to lead to an early diagnostic - desperately needed for MND. abdn.ac.uk/news/22988/

Researchers from University of Aberdeen and The University of Edinburgh are developing a new tool which may help to identify signs of #MND #ALS earlier. Further research is now needed to develop this into a potential test, which could help lead to earlier diagnosis.

This is a huge team effort and not possible without the incredible work done by our colleagues in the Italian Institute of Technology Tartaglia Lab who designed this aptamer using especially designed computer algorithms- without which this work is not possible

🚨New publication🚨Clinicopathological analysis of NEK1 variants in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. We show that NEK1 loss of function can either be mediated through loss of NEK1 translation or through aggregation of NEK1 protein (p.Arg261His mutation). doi.org/10.1111/bpa.13…

Important research from Olivia Rifai about NEK1 - a relatively newly described ALS gene and one that is found in the Scottish population. Taking us further towards understanding the unique pathological hallmarks and unifying features of genetic ALS GregoryLab

Our new paper from GregoryLab is out! We performed pathological profiling of post-mortem tissue in a case series of 3 ALS patients with NEK1 variants. Our findings suggest that pathological mechanisms may be different between variants, ie, NEK1 absence vs aggregation #ALS #NEK1
