In early 1915 a group of Afridi soldiers fighting on the western front defected to the German side. Their exit was the cause of much talk, gossips, and questions all of which culminated with the spreading of the ultimate rumour: Kaiser Wilhelm II had accepted Islam. (🧵)

Mir Dast Afridi was a sepoy in the British Indian army posted in France. His quick thinking and courage during the 2nd battle of Ypres won him much fame and a Victoria cross from the empire. Only Mir Dast had a brother in the same army. Who took a very different route.

Mir Dast’s brother - named Mir Mast - was also posted in France. Soon it dawned upon him that he was on the battlefield against the allies of the Ottomans who controlled the Holy Lands. His faith in the Union Jack collapsed and he soon found himself crossing over to the Germans.

With his defection rumours started spreading that much like his brother getting the Victoria Cross Mir Mast has been awarded the Iron Cross by the Germans. Two brothers on opposite sides both having been given the highest honour was an excellent tale for soldiers to believe in.

Then a letter arrived to the remaining Afridis in the British camp containing a bizarre claim: their fellows on the German side told them of being content and happy because they were serving a Muslim king. The Muslim king being the last Kaiser of Germany.

This wasn’t the only occasion of such rumours being spread. Similar rumours about Kaiser Wilhelm and Islam were reported in the German propaganda in Turkey and even in Iran. It appears the Afridis too had ended up putting their faith in one of Germany’s central propagandas.

As for Mir Mast it is not known whether he truly did win the Iron cross. Some historians believe for it to have been possible but since most records were destroyed there is not much we can know. He was then sent in joint German-Turkish mission to Kabul.
