Tonight we had a huge salad using microgreens, sprouts, Bibb lettuce, oak leaf lettuce, spinach, arugula, carrot, and apples from Yellowbird Foodshed. It was so delicious that we ate it too fast for photos. I love using our fresh, local produce.

Yes i am a scientist. i will tweet all about my experiments and the great papers i read but being a scientist is not my only identity. If me speaking out about injustices bothers you, feel free to unfollow me. I’m not here for followers, I’m here to share my story and make change

I’ll be doing a live video chat tonight on the topic of ā€œTalking to Young People About Race.ā€ I’ll be joined by two educators I respect greatly. Be sure to join the conversation tonight at 8e/7c.

I was asked if I thought it was my job to talk about race in a science classroom. If you think science is more important to me than the well-being of all my students, then you have a very different understanding of my job than I. Thanks Dwayne Reed for #maslowbeforebloom

I am beyond grateful for the chance to teach remotely this year, and my students have been amazing. But today, I just miss teaching in person so much.

Today the sun was shining, and some of my students were *Talking* to each other online, trying to make sense of their learning. It helps me remember just how wonderful this job can be. Thanks, Universe. I needed the reminder. I miss chaotic student discourse so much.

Today, 3 separate students contacted me to tell me about ā€œreal worldā€ science-y things they understood because of things we learned in chemistry or biology class this year. It made my entire Friday.

Anyone have any good suggestions for a phase change lab for HS AP chem using something other than water or lauric acid? #modchem #chemed

Clock reaction fun. Worked well in 11th period. 2nd period re-learned why we don’t measure volume using a beaker. #iteachchem

As part of our ongoing quest to find better ways to make MOFs for organic chemistry and chemical separations, 3rd year Tyler has found that simply combining metal (hydrate) salts and MOF linkers together at high temperatures is a surprisingly general way to make MOFs!

The other day I called the yellow zeros ā€œplaceholder zerosā€ (like I always have) but then I called the blue zero a ā€œprecision zeroā€. My AP chem kids said that it really helped. Probably you already do this… but just in case it helps you too. #iteachchem

My new favorite find for #ThinkingClassroom in my chemistry classes are the active learning questions in the Zumdahl book. Truly a game changer. #modchem #Iteachchem

Exciting full-circle moment tonight! So blessed to be sharing science will all these incredible people! Thanks The Matson Lab for giving me the space to do cool chemistry every day #NERM2022
