Faaaantastic talk by SalehLab on the role of retrotransposon RT in promoting RNAi antiviral immunity in Drosophila and mosquitoes. Upon RNA virus infection, endogenous RT activity produces viral DNA that boost RNAi against virus. I ❤️ it! #icte2024

What’s in our genome: 🧬~1% codes for cellular proteins 🧬~54% is transposable elements and other repeats, including 17% LINE1 and 10% Alu SINEs 🧬~45% is non-coding DNA of unknown origin (probably mostly ancient TEs) As always, superb talk by Kathleen Helen Burns at #ICTE2024

Brilliant story by Josh Dubnau 🇵🇸 on a fly model to show the mysterious communication between tdp-43 in glia and pathology in neurons. How? Why endogenous retroviruses of course! ERVs are both upstream and downstream of TDP-43 mediated pathology 🤯 pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/36810738/ #ICTE2024

Cool talk by Julia Fuchs on how Line 1 ORF1 might compromise nuclear integrity in neurons (biorxiv.org/content/10.110…) #ICTE2024 ORF1 interacts with Lamin B, causes Lamin delocalization; a causal role for L1 in neurodegeneration! (My brain cannot take in more 🤯 information!)

Brilliant keynote by Sandra DuharcourtLab on the extraordinary epigenetic gymnastics of TE DNA elimination in ciliates. So much good science at #ICTE2024 it’s guaranteed to send me back home with no brain left 🤯🤯🤯

Two papers in nature present a new genome editing technique that enables the insertion, inversion and deletion of long DNA sequences at user-specified genome positions. The approach may provide an easier method of genome editing. go.nature.com/3RGkI8M go.nature.com/3RHBvIs
