You can see how the yield of different crops stays flat for decades and suddenly explodes in the 40’s thanks to things like “legumes systems research” $4 million is chump change for the government and these kind of programs are actually really helpful.

Whilst well intentioned, the idea of Britain as 'a nation of immigrants' doesn't hold true to history. It's an Americanism. It is perfectly possible to build an inclusive British identity while remaining more or less true to history.

Raising a new born is expensive. Raising a 16 year old less so. This is a compelling case for reforming child benefit so parents get more at the start when they need it most. worksinprogress.news/p/why-child-be…

Good review. The childish generalisations Ben describes here (one side = 100% heroes, other side = evil people who don't care if their children die) are the kind of thing a supposedly serious commentator should be embarrassed by, yet you see it all the time on this topic

This view coming in to Heathrow a few days ago probably cured my fear of flying by ~10% (Spot the London landmarks! 🥰🇬🇧)

You get 2 nice characteristics if you skip street parking & instead opt for parking courts: 1. Streets are immediately more slender, without encroaching on drive lanes 2. Land used for parking is consolidated into a bigger chunk, allowing more possibilities for future reuse

Why is the British state obsessed with enforcing equality at all costs? “In post-religious, post-aspiration Britain, we are not comfortable expressing any values beyond a bland commitment to equality.” My latest in this month’s The Critic:

The NHS has removed the competitive part of F1 job allocation in order to make it “less stressful”, and address “differential attainment concerns”. The results are predictably awful, writes Ellen Pasternack thecritic.co.uk/issues/june-20…

A reason not to let a machine do your writing for you: "the process of writing one's thoughts leads individuals to refine those thoughts and to discover new ways of thinking" in a self-questioning process that is analogous to a kind of interior Socratic dialogue

They’re basically suppressing wages in industries where the government is the employer. It’s much easier and cheaper to hire overseas social care and healthcare workers than it is to train them. Since there’s no free market & no competitors the service degradation doesn’t matter

Fun geography fact: On the Sino-Kazakh border you can find the so-called "pole of inaccessibility" Aka the one spot on earth furthest from any ocean
