It is really important to speak up now. Our advocacy about severe eating disorders is being dismissed as “overblown” “scaring patients”. Yes, it is a small minority but these are disturbed young people who are at risk. How many collateral deaths are acceptable?

“I was unsure what I thought when the assisted dying bill passed its second reading,” writes Jenni Russell. “Three months on and I could not be more certain that MPs will be making a grave mistake if they allow this momentous measure to become law.” thetimes.com/article/93eb00…

This man has been a hero. He's never met a slight or mendacity with anything other than equilibrium and stateman like calm. He has been a stalwart for the vulnerable, the marginalised and those not favoured by well funded lobbyists. We owe him a great debt.

The government, not Kim Leadbeater, has decided to postpone this terrible Bill. Which shows just how much it was a government Bill all along. Some of us will keep fighting to ensure it is never implemented. theguardian.com/society/2025/m…

One of the most inexplicable aspects of the AD debate is the reluctance of medical bodies to go beyond “neutrality” - which they interpret as silence. While the medical role is profoundly changed.

Profoundly disappointed by Royal College of Psychiatrists and their apparent silence over this. Regardless of respect for diversity of members’ and fellows’ views on AD, the obvious dangers of the Bill and the impact on psychiatrists concern all of us. MPs, the Public and the Media need to know this.

Remarkable development. Leadbeater first tried to block the Royal College of Psychiatrists from testifying to the committee, then suddenly decided every suicide needs a psychiatrist’s sign-off. Now the Royal College, after “extensive consultation”, say the bill is unsupportable.

It’s not too late to divert the #AssistedDying bandwagon. Such a profound issue of society’s values, of clinical care & professional ethics, is not resolved by a yes/no vote. Pause, listen, reflect, consider the unintended consequences.

Medical professionals do not back this Bill. Many are opposed. Most important, not a single organisation of disabled people backs it, one of the reasons why the Committee did not call them to speak. news.sky.com/story/royal-co…

It appears that this dangerous legislation will be pushed through due to lack of time and proper scrutiny. What a legacy for every single MP and The Labour Party

Thousands of years of medical ethics have stood the test of time. Facilitating suicide or euthanasia is not modern or progressive. It is simply dangerous. Even if it is financially beneficial for the state.

The Leadbeater bill is on a knife-edge; but if it passes, you can expect in 10-15 years to hear its backers saying, “Of course, in retrospect…” and “Hindsight is 20/20” and “Had we known then what we know now…” Thread on what we know now, June 10 2025:

Not the main argument against #AssistedDyingBill that I would use, but it could be the best approach to use with Labour MPs. theguardian.com/commentisfree/…
