Proud that the lab played a part with Angelo, Paneesha and Tanja in a great paper in Nature to identify ribonuclease excision repair as a target lesion that may sensitise chronic leukaemia cells for PARP inhibition! nature.com/articles/s4158…

European Congress of Immunology in Amsterdam. Fantastic to see so many young scientists passionate about the discipline that will transform medicine. Wonderful gender balance...including four great female scientists from Mosslab ! Great way to come back to work after holidays..

Wonderful Turner Prize shortlist. Musing on creativity in art and science.. Evolution has been infinitely more creative in biology than humans so far - we are now challenging our imaginations to try to understand it.

Fascinating paper on how rapidly and widely mutations accumulate in normal tissue with age. Eggs and sperm are the genomic ‘Crown Jewels’. Starts to go wrong pretty soon in our body (soma). No surprise the ‘disposable soma’ is a great theory of ageing. sanger.ac.uk/news/view/muta…

Interviewed about ‘public confidence in vaccines’ on LBC radio this morning, so not a topic I know a lot about.. A little nerve wracking but vital that we communicate to the public - an essential part of the job description of contemporary scientists !

Super review from one of the UK’s premier immunologists. cDC present antigen to T cells and are critical in tumour responses. Despite all the interest in T cells.. “We still know very little about the biology of cDC1 in human cancer patients”. Remarkable. Needs to be addressed

At the international CMV Immunity and immune senescence conference in Germany. Super insights into how we can control a persistent virus for 80+ years and the problems- and benefits -that result from the ‘relationship’. We will host in Birmingham in 2 years !

American Society of Haematology in San Diego. Domestic news dominated by funeral of former President George Bush. He lost his daughter Robin to acute leukaemia in 1953. 26,000 scientists here working to eradicate the burden of leukaemia for future generations.

Lovely to see my invitee Professor Sir Mike Owen receive honorary degree. Fantastic work on genetics of schizophrenia. Father, himself, brother and niece studied at University of Birmingham.A psychiatrist, his advice to graduates-seek happiness in an analogue, not digital, world.

Popped into the Wellcome Collection. Nothing quite conveys the breathtaking scale of the human genome as well as their genome book. A library of one person’s DNA sequence. Very very small font on each page...

Great work from Jianmin, Shamez and the whole team ! Encouraging to see robust immune responses out to 6 months. Likely underpins strong vaccine responses seen in people with previous infection.. UK-CIC
