And about half of people on Universal Credit have run out of food & couldn’t afford more. Our social security system utterly fails in its most basic duty to protect people from going without essentials.

💫 Enjoyed speaking at the Student Action Against Poverty event at the The University of Manchester! Shared my journey into the policy sector and how students can build a career—staying informed, getting involved locally, and taking action. Great to see so much enthusiasm in the room!

The stats are heartbreaking—nearly 1 in 3 women experience violence in their lifetime. No community is free from this reality. It’s a global crisis, and it’s getting worse. Survivors need justice. Perpetrators must be held accountable. It’s time to stop looking away.

If you're paying council tax in the North of England, you really ought to know (and be annoyed) about this I've written about it in my Northern Agenda Extra newsletter but here's a 🧵 1/19

The government is right to promote growth, but growth alone won’t lift living standards & drive down poverty. Government has to be bold in investing in localities that are underdeveloped, investing in social security & ensuring the economy delivers good quality jobs for all.

Council tax = our only truly regressive tax & many councils abolished or cut back their Council Tax Reduction schemes (which can help protect some people on low incomes). When services are cut & council tax rises, the same people get clobbered: those with the fewest resources.

Council Tax is just enraging. Regressive, divorced from reality, driving the poorest into debt, hunger, hardship. Getting worse. But no political party has yet had the courage to sort it out. Great analysis from Lalitha Try Tom Clark Resolution Foundation resolutionfoundation.org/comment/rising…

📢 Yesterday the government published the latest Household Support Fund (HSF) guidance to local councils. Worryingly, the government are encouraging the use of vouchers instead of recipients receiving direct cash support, due to concerns on how money may be spent.

Another scandal that govts of all colours have lacked courage to tackle. Council tax is outdated, regressive, and grossly unfair to those living in poorer regions and in cheaper properties. It needs updating and making proportional to current value thetimes.com/article/642218…

We live in one of the wealthiest countries in the world, and yet 1 in 7 people in the UK are facing hunger. This isn't right. Repost if you agree
