Composer & suffragette Ethel Smyth, in characteristic dress & pose, with one of her Old English Sheepdogs, all named Pan, in 1927 (now National Portrait Gallery). She wrote a book, ‘Inordinate (?) Affection’: A Story for Dog Lovers’, about 5 of her dogs including Pan IV who was her favourite.

It is famously said that Ginger Rogers did everything the great Fred Astaire did just “backwards and in high heels”…. Well. Here is Esther Stace in 1915 clearing a record 6'6" at the Sydney Royal Show…. RIDING SIDESADDLE.

It was a great paper, especially showing how pets could queer ideas of family, for those living outside heteronormative structures, & even within it. Took in some great taxidermy advice along the way (basically, don't stuff your pets, they're never so cute after death!)

For #LesbianVisbilityWeek here’s a fabulous picture from 1939 of the writer Bryher, who was the partner of modernist poet H.D., the Austrian-American psychoanalyst Christine Olden, and a very important cocker spaniel (NOW BeineckeLibrary) #LGBWithTheT

Please see our 2024 call for shorter “snapshots” articles (2,000 words) on the topics listed below. It’s a great opportunity to introduce yourself to your field as an Early Career Researcher. It’s also a platform for more established academics to present shorter case studies 😎
