A #wildfire in Ofunato, Iwate Pref., has spread to 1,400 ha, making it Japan's largest wildfire in at least 3 decades. Tragically, the fire is believed to have claimed 1 life and damaged 80+ homes. The affected area is still recovering from the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake.

Tropical #CycloneAlfred, a category 2 system, is slowly moving towards the #SEQld coast. The centre of Alfred is expected to cross the coast very early Saturday morning, most likely between #Noosa and #Coolangatta. Latest: bom.gov.au/cyclone/

Where is the heat coming from this week? 🌡️ A broad area of high pressure is currently positioned over the UK, leading to sinking air that warms as it descends. Combined with prolonged sunshine, this is expected to push temperatures up to 29°C in southern areas by Thursday ☀️

With the temperature at Kew Gardens reaching 28.0 °C and still climbing, it is now officially the warmest start to May on record for the UK The previous May 1st record high temperature was 27.4 °C at Lossiemouth in Scotland in 1990 🌡️
