People who say "parents these days don't spend time with their kids" clearly have missed the most unprecedented trend in parenthood history. #timemanagement #parenthood #college #education #university #helicopterparent #parents

Ila Fiete lights up when discussing grid cells, which have inspired much of her research. We discuss what a "neurophysicist" is, the idea that grid cells give place cells a scaffold upon which to pin our memories, and attractor landscapes of cognition. braininspired.co/podcast/132/

I am genuinely someone who thinks there is value in understanding the genetics behind educational attainment / exam results, in particular for causal analysis (mendelian randomisation etc) but some things from genetics end put my teeth on edge.

I know nothing about AI, but loved this paper. Unlike AIs, brains are built by learning at two scales: from evolution, in a really large timescale that determines the brain's regularities; and through learning proper, which polishes the details. nature.com/articles/s4146…

Paper out!!! #Drosophila has muscles that attach to their retinas, which it uses to move its photoreceptor sheet in ways that resemble vertebrate eye movements nature nature.com/articles/s4158…

You know the term "efference copy". Would you like to listen to the neurons that encode it? Here is an example, in the cerebellum. (sound on please) Work of Mohammad Amin Fakharian and Alden Shoup

If you are at #cosyne2023 and want to find out how V1 constructs 3D receptive fields using self-generated visual motion, stop by the Znamenskiy lab's first ever poster from Yiran He and Antonin Blot! Saturday III-134.

Tracing synaptic connections is hard, even more so in the human brain. We recently developed a new high-throughput circuit tracing approach and are looking for a postdoctoral clinical fellow to apply it to human brain tissue. Interested? Get in touch! crick.ac.uk/careers-study/…

How does the brain implement and switch between different behavioural strategies, such as explore, exploit or disengage? Remarkably, a small nucleus in the midbrain can do it all! A new, exciting direction for my lab led by the amazing Mehran Ahmadlou: biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

Do V1 cells have 3D receptive fields? This is beautiful work headed by my smart colleague Yiran He . It was exciting to be a part of it. Have a look!

📢We are looking for a postdoc to follow up on these results. How do depth-selective responses arise and are transformed across the visual hierarchy? How do V1 neurons encode depth in freely moving animals? Please RT and get in touch if you are interested! crick.ac.uk/careers-study/…
