What we think about #dementia changes how we approach it, so it's important to try and understand someone's individual perspective. We found that most people with #dementia spoke about it very differently from how a #doctor would talk about #dementia. /2

There are several different ways in which people with #dementia understand the condition. Not everyone uses the label given at #diagnosis. Some people talk more about #symptoms, others about #ageing. Some aren't sure, and others don't perceive any problem. /3

What we think about #dementia can also affect how we feel about it, and how we cope. These different understandings are linked to different levels of #wellbeing. This is why we want to understand the different ways of conceptualising dementia and the affect these have. /4

Where do our ideas about #dementia come from? Representations in the media play an important role, as does the language used by doctors and healthcare professionals. /5
