I find myself depressed that it does not seem politically possible to stress the benefits of inward migration. Both parties are trying to fight over the territory of viewing migration as bad, a dependence, as something that deprives residents of something.

Migrant rights have been extended, but the access to long-term settlement (family reunification and permanent residence) has been limited (except citizenship of one considers it as an aspect of long-term settlement). But there is also important variance across regions. 4/5
