This is why the psychiatric, cognitive-behavioural and traditional psychoanalytic focus on sub-personal processes & hypothesised mechanisms can do more harm than good. They involve a literal de-humanisation.

This is not a new idea… 20 years ago in our clinic we called this effect the ‘diagnostic bounce’ ….‘bounce’ because after the initial ‘up’ people fall back down to earth again….. Anthropologists have long discussed this - e.g Kleinman, E. Martin etc
