This is why the psychiatric, cognitive-behavioural and traditional psychoanalytic focus on sub-personal processes & hypothesised mechanisms can do more harm than good. They involve a literal de-humanisation.

As soon as you look through the distressed person in and into the imagined presence of whatever hypothesised dysfunctional internal mechanisms are in vogue, you've already failed them.

This is not a new idea… 20 years ago in our clinic we called this effect the ‘diagnostic bounce’ ….‘bounce’ because after the initial ‘up’ people fall back down to earth again….. Anthropologists have long discussed this - e.g Kleinman, E. Martin etc
