On the Air India flight back to Delhi from London, an elderly Indian couple next to me chatted very warmly with me, spoke about their retired life & daughters,offered cake etc till the flight attendant came & handed me the Muslim non-veg meal I had opted for over the Hindu nv one

This was 30-35 minutes into the flight. Post this their body language changed, faces turned stiff, the conversation stopped & the woman even refused to respond when I told her that my glasses had fallen around her feet. I had to literally go around her legs to pick them up.

The incident offended me but I can’t even imagine how unsafe a Muslim person would have felt in this situation. Are meals as signifiers of identity, real or assumed, really needed on planes?
