28 June 1914. Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne and his wife Sophie, Duchess of Hohenberg, were assassinated in Sarajevo, capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It was the trigger for an international crisis that led to the outbreak of the “Great War”.

Franz Ferdinand and Sophie Chotek. On this day in 1914, their assassination sparks WW1. Franz's last words to Sophie were "Sophie, Sophie! Don't die! Live for our children!" Their children were Ernst (10), Maximilian (11), and Sophie (12).
