As a SpAd in HMT who helped negotiate the move to 2.5% by 2030, it's clear that it isn't sufficient now. Of course the fiscal position is tight, but Hegseth comments show that this is existential for NATO. The UK HAS to step up spending. The costs of inaction are FAR higher.

For all the reaction to the JD Vance speech, I have to wonder...why aren't we announcing emergency budgets across Europe and the UK? We are on our own. We have to up our defence capability extremely rapidly. We can't sit around for another year and hope for the best.
