Seeing lots of snide comments (and self praise for their own rationality) by people who don't understand why other people find this study problematic. They should think harder. This study is arguably neither useful nor ethical (1/N)

Back from another China trip. 6 days - 5 cities - 8 factories. Like always, China overwhelms & scares you with its speed & scale. One goal for the trip was to learn how do we replicate same thing in India. We went to factories that have seen exponential growth in last 5 years.

Awesome article by William Dalrymple. I wish the writer was an Indian. Sadly, it has fallen upon western scholars to write about India's civilizational achievements. A nation that has memory-holed its past cannot build a confident future. A thread. 1/14 theguardian.com/world/article/โ€ฆ

Ok letโ€™s have an actual opinion. Daron Acemoglu is a genius who could win a Nobel for many reasons. But the institutions and growth literature is troubling+shaky because of its identification. Colonialism comes with literal genocides, brutal subjugation, and centuries of

Until last year, I was a fiscal conservative on defence: ~2% of GDP was probably enough, and the armed forces had to restructure to be able to absorb new technologies. Events have changed my mind. India cannot afford to be slow and conservative on defence. 1/3

So,why does a man who recommends that people read Will Durant then go on to defend the British Empire in an egregious manner? Has he read Durant or not? To those who came late, Durant had this to say in his 'The Case for India': "The British conquest of India was the invasion and

This sums up the problem perfectly. The biggest thing holding back any rapid development (incl. businesses) is the bureaucracy. That was, and remains, the biggest impediment. Babus do not understand the basics of business or research.

So many such stories. All low hanging fruits that can be easily plucked. But they havenโ€™t been even into the third term. And clown Goyal will give global gyaan about deep tech startups.

There is a severe talent deficit in the government beyond the foreign minster (and a few other notable exceptions). They lack vision, which has been used by the bureaucracy to extract rents.
