To that grad student in my class today who said, "I don't know if this is on topic, but developmental editing IS HARD." That is absolutely true. All of publishing is hard. That's what keeps me interested.

If you had to make a reading list to encapsulate where YA publishing is right now. Max 5 books. All from within past 5 years. Range of genres, both debuts & established auths, bestsellers & not. (This is not hypothetical. I'm updating syllabus for a graduate class.) Suggestions?

Putting it out there that I adore MG and YA graphic novels, read them constantly for fun, but haven't gotten to edit as many as I'd like. Publishers & authors, if you have a script that needs extra attention, I'll be over here happy to hear from you.

Conference hosts, I love you, but when you first meet publishing pros, please avoid saying things like, "You're so young! I could be your mom!" I know you mean it kindly but it's belittling and awkward. Book ppl might look young but inside we are all ancient.

So much of editing is just slowing down and thinking about implications and repercussions.

Whelp, after 2.5+ years of successfully avoiding it, I've got Covid. Luckily I'm well stocked with tea, audiobooks, and friends and family yelling at me to slow down and rest.

2022 in freelancing: 17 clients (2 large publishers, 1 small, and the rest individual authors), 2 graduate-level courses taught, 1 training course completed and another started, and yet I want more from this year. Stories keep me hungry.
