Love this model, and there's a track record of this working out well. Sridhar Vembu bootstrapped his way to a billion dollar business building cheaper versions of Salesforce, Hubspot, Google Docs, etc. with Zoho - and even more impressively, he did it while rocking a lungi.

All of the critiques essentially come down to not trusting people: to make their own decisions, to understand that some of the information won’t be accurate (and that they need to verify), and to think through nuanced choices on their own. Same arguments that support censorship.
