Following meeting with the White House on a potential shutdown and Democrats' concerns over healthcare, Schumer said the president "seemed to understand for the first time the magnitude of this crisis." Says they're still far apart but said POTUS heard their concerns.

Here we go, Senate voting now on the GOP funding extension. All signs point to shutdown. washingtonpost.com/business/2025/…

Senate rejects funding extension through Nov. 21 by a vote of 55-45 (it needed 60 votes to pass.) The only two Dems to join w/ Republicans to pass it were Catherine Cortez Masto & John Fetterman, plus independent Angus King. Rand Paul joined with most Dems in opposing it.

Rep. Jason Smith calls for changes to Senate filibuster on Bloomberg TV's Balance of Power. “The 60-vote filibuster over the United States Senate, they need to break that right now if it means delivering paychecks for military and to open up government." h/t Chris Cioffi

… while Johnson refuses to swear her in, her offices are shuttered. No one is helping constituents. There is no staff. He’s denying her a seat because of a political reason. That’s not how it’s supposed to work. My column: washingtonpost.com/politics/2025/…

Gallego says he’ll accept a GOP promise to extend ACA subsidies and vote on the CR — as long as that CR lapses “a couple days before Nov. 1.” That way “if they screw us, then I’d just go back and shut it down again.”

Appropriators are some of the most powerful people on Capitol Hill - but that power is slowly slipping away as the White House makes its own spending moves and Congress doesn't stand up for itself. w/ Liz Goodwin & Marianna Sotomayor washingtonpost.com/politics/2025/…

Wow, bleak vibes for the future of Congress’ job to shape spending: “If I were betting man, I would say that there's at least a 50-50 chance that for the rest of President Trump's term, we will fund government through CRs and recission packages,” says Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA)
