Bob Hoskins was one of the greatest. In the final scene of The Long Good Friday (1980), he silently replays the film's events in his head, ticking off signs of his ultimate downfall one by one. It's an acting masterclass. We'll never see another like Bob.

Sansho the Bailiff (1954, Mizoguchi) “Kenji Mizoguchi is capable of going beyond the limitations of coherent logic, and conveying the deep complexity and truth of the impalpable connections and hidden phenomena of life.” —Andrei Tarkovsky

28 YEARS LATER (2025): Loved this. Between Boyle’s bracing formal ingenuity and Fiennes’ tremendous section - which is genuinely lovely, haunting and emotionally complex in a way I was not at all anticipating - this feels like an oasis in a dreary desert of studio films.

Perhaps the greatest film ending of all time. Everything Tsutomu Yamazaki does in this scene, going through the whole gamult of emotions of the kidnapper, is amazing.

The internet as one of innumerable walls that isolate and atomize but don't protect; once that levee breaks all the rest come with it, financial, personal, moral. The stupidest reckoning will leave you with nothing to learn. Hilarious

Son Ye-jin is remarkable and devastating in THE LAST PRINCESS. Absolutely deserving of all the plaudits she won, wrenching your heart out through every step of Princess Deokhye’s journey.
