A scarcely noticed influence of Scots writing on world literature is the presence of vernacular in W. Scott’s dialogs. Scott’s Burnsian/democratic trope had a huge impact on the Scott-reading Romantics across Europe. No Misérables without the Scots speakers of Waverley. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🌍

Did my pilgrimage to Paris ‘Rue d’Écosse’. So much history took place in this little street, a few yards from the old Scots College, where generations of Scottish theologians, scholars, students exiles and Jacobites lived from the 14c to the 18c. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇫🇷

A l'occasion de la commémoration de l’armistice de 1918, le Consul général Stéphane Pailler a déposé une gerbe et observé deux minutes de silence à la cathédrale St Giles, en hommage aux soldats écossais tombés en France. We remember them. #ArmisticeDay #11novembre #LestWeForget

Wrote a long review in French of Josie Giles’s magnum opus, ‘Deep Wheel Orcadia’ (Picador, 2022) for La Revue Écossaise Sci-Fi, Scots, Orkney, capitalism, resource extraction, extinction, queer identities and ceilidh dancing: a must-read for both islanders and continentals.

It was Denis Saurat, a Frenchman, who made Hugh MacDiarmid’s poems known overseas 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇫🇷 100 years later, I’m pleased to publish a (re)translation of Saurat’s ‘Le Groupe de la Renaissance écossaise’ with an intro by @se_lyall and editing by Patrick Scott/SSL scholarcommons.sc.edu/ssl/vol49/iss1…
