In the 1980s, the Queen visited Sheffield and had lunch with city council leader David Blunkett. He recorded in his diary that the Queen thoughtfully asked if he needed his meat cutting up. When he declined, she (less tactfully) said, 'You know, I often do it for the corgis'.

Are there any portraits of Patrick, the 6th Lord Gray? Said to be James VI/I's first lover, but I can't see what he looked like! thepeerage.com/p1341.htm

Well done to Kate for reminding the government that decolonisation should be about listening to the people who were colonised about what they want for their future. What has the government done to listen to the Chagossians about whether they wish to be under Mauritian rule?

Terrific piece by Philip Cowley on parliamentary rebellions, especially first year Labour governments. The largest postwar rebellion in the first year of a govt came in 1975 when 91 Labour MPs voted against increasing funds for the royal household. ft.com/content/f63785…

Horace Greeley's surprise victory at the 1872 Liberal Republican convention was ascribed to a 'famous bargain made by Brown and Blair'. Called 'the Blair-Brown juggle' by some writers. Blair helped get Brown to back Greeley who made Brown VP nominee Not quite the Granita pact!

It was the leadership (Harriet Harman) mishandling a vote on welfare reform that provided major oxygen to Corbyn's rise in summer 2015. Almost exactly a decade later, could this week's vote propel another mobilisation of the left, this time as exit from Labour rather than into it

I appreciate the Big Issue for allowing me to get a few thoughts off my chest about the Starmer government! Great to share the story with colleagues and Labour politics experts Patrick Diamond and Colm Murphy bigissue.com/news/politics/…

🎂 It’s the anniversary of Labour’s election win. The Government had some early stumbles, but what do the public think is their biggest mistake? Asked to say in their own words, it’s one of the most stark word clouds we’ve seen. Winter Fuel Allowance drowns everything else out.
