Vincent Puhakka tells Executive Committee why we support a congestion cap on rideshare licenses, with no EV exemption. Unreliable transit has driven people into the waiting arms of rideshare companies. But all the Ubers cruising around downtown are not helping #TTC reliability!

Investigation Toronto Star - I worked as an Uber Eats courier for 6 weeks to collect data on the app and how workers are paid After 140 hrs of work I made $1.74/ hour and $73 in tips The app “gamifies work” keeping drivers hooked and their wages low👇🏽 thestar.com/business/i-wen…

$1.74/hour. That’s what a Toronto Star reporter earned delivering for Uber Eats. Gig workers deserve: ⚖️ Fair pay for all hours worked 🏥 Safe working conditions Ontario’s new laws don’t go far enough. Workers need justice NOW. thestar.com/business/i-wen…

Councillor Gord Perks asks City Manager Paul Johnson about the various subsidy programs the city offers for low-income people. "There's a strong correlation that says we would have fewer of these subsidy programs if people just had the right wage," says Johnson.

This is big. Toronto’s City Council has named the problem - ride-hailing gig employers can and do depend on predatory practices, and the impacts are felt throughout our communities - and has put this problem on the agenda of all three levels of government.

You'd think #Uber would support secure infrastructure to keep its workers safe; instead, it is part of TRBT's task force that asks for the removal of bike lanes & curbside cafes in #TOpoli. Not a word from Jake Brockman & Uber in support of bike lanes... torontotoday.ca/local/opinion/…

That investigation was so well done & exposed Uber’s exploitative business model. Seeing “progressive” political staffers not resist Uber’s political pressure is disheartening. Mitigating political risk for their leaders turns workers away from the NDP & progressive politics.
