this is the kind of thing i keep underlining for my students. but when they see top levels of government, commercial producers (see the summer reading list incident from last week), and scholars doing the same thing? geez. the "real world" has to discipline itself too.

i agree in the main w/ all this. heaney's great & his translation is great, but it does make #beowulf a different kind of literary thing. i've taught liuzza's but not chickoring's (gorrie's rec's); i highly recommend dick ringler's #translation. in #oldenglish meter & fantastic.
