The Humans and Hyenas Alliance is excited to unveil our new logo, designed by a fellow National Geographic Explorer & scientific illustrator, Lauren Eckert, PhD w/input from many colleagues around the world. Great timing to boost our fundraiser for a new vehicle! gofund.me/b0810019

We teach a really cool module at Dept of Zoology for our ecology students on natural history #museums' vital role in evidencing environmental change. What's even better is that it includes a class on colonial legacies too. It's important they hear the history behind the collections.

Another local myth dies today. For 70 years historians, scientists (and the Chronicle!) said Monarch was the bear on the California flag. Detailed research for a new @CalAcademy exhibition tells a much different story. Some good bear sleuthing here ⬇️ sfchronicle.com/totalsf/articl…

Hi friends, *need your help*! Right-wingers spammed our new doc Queer Planet w/ 1 star reviews on IMDB, bringing the rating rapidly from around 8/10 down to 4/10 within just a few days 😟. Please give us 9 & 10 star reviews to fight back! & share widely💛 m.imdb.com/title/tt281086…

Was sure I imagined this piece of San Francisco ichthyology history, until I found the San Francisco Chronicle story and photos. For five days in 1980, a great white shark lived in Golden Gate Park. (And then made it out alive.) 🦈🌁💯 sfchronicle.com/totalsf/articl…

The shark arrived at California Academy of Sciences when “Jaws” was still a sensation. Fishing captains were offered rewards up to $7,000 for a live great white, which were apparently very hard to keep alive. (Steinhart got Sandy because someone answered their phone.) sfchronicle.com/totalsf/articl…

Not good. Museum collections & research are essential to understanding both the history and future of life on Earth. "California Academy of Sciences reeling from budget cuts: a major natural history collection loses one-quarter of its curators" science.org/content/articl…
