Martial’s advice on #Saturnalia gifts continues in his epigrams 13.9: “Receive these Egyptian lentils, a gift from Pelusium; if they are not so good as barley, they are better than beans.” Sounds a little unfair to barley and beans but we’ll still accept lentils. #AncientRome

For #RomanFortThursday a basket found in a well at the eastern fort at Welzheim. The damp environment has preserved it in a good condition. On display at our branch museum Limesmuseum Aalen #RomanArchaeology

It’s time to mosey on into a new #MosaicMonday with some fantastic marine life. In this amazing scene, fish and their sea fellows occupy the water and the sky!

#ReliefWednesday The Sarcophagus of Portonaccio is named after the area in which it was found in 1931 and dates to c. 180 CE. The level of detail in the battle scene is extraordinary and the subject matter has led to the theory that it was intended for an army general.

Io Saturnalia! Catullus called it "the best of days." This Roman festival honored Saturn with gift-giving, feasting, and even role reversals between enslaved people & their masters. Sound familiar? Let’s explore its ties to modern winter traditions! 🔗youtu.be/0Dsa0F2dml4?si…

#ReliefWednesday Io Saturnalia! It’s that time of year, folks! This relief is of uncertain origin with dates ranging from C1st to the C16th CE (for what it’s worth, the latter date seems more likely…). It is thought to depict a veiled ‘Throne of Saturn’.

#FrescoFriday May your festive season brim with Saturnalian delights and a good dose of fun and games. Let’s hope it doesn’t all take a turn like this riot in the amphitheatre at Pompeii which led to the closure of the amphitheatre in 59 CE!

Golden necklace (1stC BC - 1stC AD) composed of four-leaf clovers alternated with strings. Besides, strings with blue glass pearls come out from the four-leaf clovers and they end with golden ivy leaves. From the necropolis of Aenona (Croatia), fashioned by a local workshop.

#MosaicMonday Well, we’re deep within a period of feasting and we hope you too are breaking bread and relaxing in the company of good people. This C2nd CE mosaic comes from a villa at Tor Marancia, near the Catacombs of Domitilla. A good feast was the Roman way as well!
