every few days some new media media article or data point comes out that shifts the narrative and moves the market. looking back at the last 3, 6, 12 months how many of them proved to be genuine early predictors? very few. so few in fact i can’t recall any.

intelligence and agency easy to conflate. agi can perform any intellectual task a human can--we're pretty close agency is the ability to act autonomously to achieve goals--we're far away

i'm okay with this definition of agi, but notice there's no mention of agency. if we had this today we'd still find ai lacking.

i’m growing increasingly bullish on google as the ai moat shifts from algorithmic advantage to data, infrastructure, and capital. -they already have all the data: internet, satellite, video, email -they have the distribution and products waiting for ai infusion -their cash flow

in vc, investment demand and being well capitalized drives UP the price. in public markets it’s the opposite. that’s just dumb short-term thinking.

cisco’s peak market cap in the dot com was $550b with a 200pe ratio. say we adjust that to $1.5m in today’s tech dollars. nvidia’s market cap is $4.5t, but with a pe ratio of just 50. unless we’ve all finally learned the lessons of the last 400 years, this ain’t the top.

if i’m standing in the edge of a building i can imagine myself jumping off. these ‘what if I just…’ thoughts are called intrusive thoughts or ‘call of the void’. it seems like llms are not only shielded from these thoughts—those tokens may show up in a theoretical distribution

now imagine a scenario where this is launched out of a truck in a major city and the drones are equipped with an explosive device.

fun fact, in 2011 i emailed both andrew and yann about doing a post-doc in their labs. back in the last ai winter. they both graciously responded, but unfortunately didn’t have any positions available.

“One thesis for why models plateaued in this way is that LLM-style digital AI really *is* just repeating, rather than truly thinking. It is downstream, not upstream. Now, you can get much further with this than most thought. But you can’t get all the way to novel thoughts.” i
