Poster 172. Medical student Emilia Emily Kalis analysed trends in urine cultures sent by GPs over a 6-month period. Absent or poor clinical details were seen in >70%, & there was >5-fold difference in test numbers between practices.

Emily Kalis Poster 173. Medical student Joel audited antimicrobial stewardship and the management of sepsis in the ED. Patients were over-labelled with sepsis and treated with broad spectrum Abx.

Emily Kalis Poster 175. Medical student Jia & clinician Vilma audited the implementation of ARK (Abx Review Kit) designed to measure the likelihood of infection when prescribing Abx. This first audit showed some good results, but further improvement is required.

Emily Kalis Poster 187. Trainee clinical scientist Sian Sian Josse completed an audit on the quality of antimicrobial reviews. Overall, antibiotics were reviewed effectively, & a source of infection clearly documented at 72h. Where IV antibiotics were continued, it was often appropriate.

Emily Kalis Sian Josse Trainee Clinical Scientist Shahaan Shafiq audited the use of fluoroquinolones. Overall use of these Abx was within guidelines. However, further education is required on selection of more appropriate antibiotics in patients without penicillin allergy/non-anaphylactic allergy.

Fantastic afternoon session on HCID at FIS Conference hosted by Association for Laboratory Medicine. Dr Catherine Moore @SmallRedOne on avian flu, Dr Tom Fletcher on VHFs, and Dr Anne Tunbridge on UK HCID preparedness.

We're back at FIS Conference today. The Liver Building was lit up in blue for #WAAW2024 World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week! Also, Claire, one of our amazing Biomedical Scientists had made some awesome WAAW cakes! 😋

An early heads up that we hope to appoint a direct entry STP in microbiology in Sept 2025. Come and work with our amazing team. Keep an eye on the National School of Healthcare Science website early next year! STP Perspectives

Fantastic 3 days at FIS Conference FIS|HIS International 2024. Today's highlights were rapid WGS in Brighton to find/confirm/refute outbreaks, an excellent session on standards of care for NTMs, and a great tropical infection grand round.

Lab manager post at Rare and Imported Pathogens Laboratory (RIPL), near beautiful Salisbury. You'd be working with a great team and some of the most interesting pathogens that you're likely to see in the UK 👇👇👇👇👇👇👇 healthjobsuk.com/job/UK/London/…

Massive thanks to all the Healthcare Scientists and pathologists working in blood transfusion to keep our patients safe 🙏🔬🧬💉🩸 Association for Laboratory Medicine IBMS #AtTheHeartOfHealthcare RC of Pathologists #GiveBlood 💪🩹

This is stunning. I'd expect nothing less from Duration Brewing | Norfolk, UK. So nice that #craftbeerhour has coincided with Christmas Eve 🎄 Tom #CraftBeerHour

Rare excursion back on here to say thanks to Huw Stephens BBC Radio 6 Music for this fascinating piece on the costs artists face when touring. I'd thought that since streaming, artists made their £££ from gigs. How wrong I was! bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m0…

Hi Avanti West Coast. I'm still unable to book tickets for the weekend of March 22/23. Is this due to the ongoing overtime ban or something else? Do you know when tickets will be released?

Massive thanks to Rob Shorten for giving us an informative and thought provoking talk earlier this week about #sustainability in our pathology labs. Gave us lots of ideas of how we can support change for the better in our work places. #greenlabs #greenimpact
