Danny Boyle is supportive as ever about the BBC and London 2012 in The Times and The Sunday Times today. And there was a tribute to the BBC in the stadium on the night of the opening ceremony, which meant a lot.

BBC chalk & cheese. BBC Radio 4 PM asked: are winter fuel payments the best way of addressing poverty (no) and looked at intergenerational fairness in a terrific Evan Davis interview with Liz Kendall. Almost none of this in the TV Six, but plenty of vox pops with old people being pleased.

I’m joining the applause for Tom McTague’s long read on Keir Starmer. It’s a skilled mix of profile with analysis of the state of Britain. Hard to avoid the conclusion that the scale of the task is too big for a ‘normal’ man. newstatesman.com/politics/2025/…

Hearing Arif Ahmed on BBC Radio 4 Today: the university sector is fortunate to have his leadership on free speech. Arif was a key figure in safeguarding freedoms in Cambridge University when they were under threat, and it’s cheering that The Office for Students (OfS) is taking on the battle.

Watch a terrific panel at Selwyn College discuss Labour one year into government. With Tom Baldwin, Jill Rutter, Ryan Shorthouse & Lizzy Buchan - chaired by my colleague Janet O’Sullivan. youtube.com/live/PFNvCYdoH…

It’s a really important point here by Ryan Shorthouse about the obsession of politicians and the media with short-term polling as opposed to getting long-term policies right for the country.

Listening to BBC Radio 4 PM makes me think, yet again, that Church of England bishops should not be in the House of Lords.

In these troubled times, we should salute BBC NEWS فارسی and the brave men and women who work there. The argument for the BBC and its global reach is exemplified by this kind of service. #BBCPersian

A personal endorsement: in the contest to be the next chancellor of Cambridge University, I’ll be backing Chris Smith of Pembroke College Cambridge. He’s got the experience of higher education and politics, and he’s a strong defender of academic freedom and free speech. cam.ac.uk/about-the-univ…

The celebrations for this week’s Cambridge University graduation ceremony began at Selwyn with drinks in the Master’s garden on Wednesday evening.

I’m so proud of this lot: the new Selwyn College graduates. They, and young people like them, make it possible to be optimistic about the future.

Roger Mosey Selwyn College Cambridge University I love this generation. They will save us all.
