🎙️ It was an honour to speak to Morning Ireland and FRANCE 24 English this week on Trump’s latest attacks on Jerome Powell & the real risks to the Fed’s independence. 📉 Undermining CBI isn’t just bad politics—it’s bad economics. 🎧 lnkd.in/exMCHtRx 📽️ lnkd.in/exEAC6cQ

Delighted and honoured to have been elected as a Fellow, along with my wonderful colleague Davide Romelli. Congrats to all the new Scholars also.

In the 1700s and 1800s, English and Irish developers laid out hundreds of garden squares, though there was no planning requirement that they do this, and though they never made any money on them. Why?

It warms the cockles of the heart and brings a tear to the eye to see such passion in Irish rugby still. Looking forward to hearing this on the stands on Saturday. Well done Leinster Looneys.

I would hope my first- and second-year undergrads would be able to answer this. Prices and quantities are equilibrium outcomes of shifts in underlying supply and demand. P and Q both going up means supply did not shift out as much as demand did. (Demand shocks are not uniform.)

One of the great joys in life is coming across a Bryan’s Gunn video that somehow you had missed before and it's like Christmas and your birthday present rolled into one. This one rivals the '110%' and 'massive boost' videos, if you ask me.

Fake news! Of Leinster's seven URC knockout games at home since the competition started in 21/22, this was the third highest attendance (almost 16,000), after two 'interpros', 2023 SF v Munster and 2024 QF v Ulster. (Average Glasgow attendance for knock-outs games: 6,563.)

Hard to explain to younger generations what Ireland was like pre-Celtic Tiger. But this video, from 1989, does a good job. Of ~100 17yos, maybe 20 saw themselves still in the country in a few years because of a lack of jobs. Almost 100% would stay if there were jobs.

Very sad to hear of the passing of Dermot McAleese, something of an institution in Trinity, including Faculty Dean and, for 1979-2004, Whateley Professor of Political Economy. Thinking of his family and closest friends at this time.

What determines electoral success in Ireland? Being Junior Minister, it turns out, does nothing. Being a woman reduces re-election chances by ten percentage points. Oh, and don't be in the out-going government (unless you're a Senior Minister). esr.ie/index.php/esr/…
