In 1996, Quad City Classic was opposite Presidents Cup. After 54 holes Tiger Woods led Quad City. I left the Cup & when I got to Quad City bought this hat as souvenir of Tiger’s 1st PGA Tour win. Instead I have souvenir of Ed Fiori’s last win. RIP, Ed. Thanks for the memories!

My birthday isn’t until August but since it’s my 75th my daughter Rachel wanted to throw a party when she and her family were visiting me on Cape Cod from LA. Thanks to ⁦Chequessett Club⁩ for working with my family and friends to make it a fun night!

Spencer Tracy was an amazing actor. Two of his films seem relevant now. “Inherit the Wind,” about the attack on science and free speech, and “Judgement at Nuremberg,” about judges that allowed fascism in Germany. Both were directed by Stanley Kramer. Both stand the test of time.

65 years ago Ladysmith Black Mambazo was founded in apartheid South Africa to sing songs of freedom. A second & third generation are still performing. Saw them tonight in Truro on Cape Cod and their message that “tough times never last, strong people do” still resonates strongly.

Of the stories on early leaderboard at The Open most compelling is Lee Westwood. Not only is he 52, he has 19 top-10 finishes in majors without a win, including 2nd 3 times, 3rd 6 times and 12 top-5s. So many times for Golf World I wrote the Westwood-Almost-Got-It-Done sidebar.

At 29, Scottie Scheffler: 17 PGA Tour wins, 4 majors, 3/4 of Career Grand Slam. Impressive. At 29, Tiger Woods: 46 wins, 10 majors & the Slam twice. At 29, Jack Nicklaus: 30 wins, 7 majors & the Slam. At 29, Bob Jones was retired with 4 US Opens wins & The Open 3 times. Historic!

This year will be the last year for this sign. The Hooters in Augusta, Ga., is among the outlets the chain is closing. For about 30 years John Daly has set up shop in the parking lot Masters week, signing autographs, posing for pictures and, of course, selling merchandise!

I’ve long felt that the best golf movie ever is Caddyshack and the worst is Caddyshack 2. I’ve changed my thinking. The worst golf movie ever is Happy Gilmour 2. At least the 20 minutes I managed to endure was dreadful.

With win in AIG Women’s Open by Miyu Yamashita LPGA has had a different winner in all 20 events this year. It’s never had a year without a multiple winner. In Covid-shortened 2020 Daniele Kang & Sei Young Kim won twice. Other than that leading winner has always had at least 3.

In 2007, I predicted Tiger Woods would pass the 18 majors won by Jack Nicklaus at The Open in 2010. But that was before ACL surgery in 2008 then Y.E. Yang becoming the Buster Douglas of golf & the scandal in 2009. The future can't be predicted, only lived: espn.co.uk/golf/pgachampi…

Precious few golf courses televise as well as Bandon Dunes Watch the U.S. Women’s Amateur for the great golf but also to see a spectacular golf property. Not a human-made structure in sight. Just nature.

Congratulations to Megha Ganne on winning the U.S. Women’s Amateur at Bandon Dunes Here’s what I wrote when she contended in the 2021 U.S. Women’s Open at Olympic Club. She not only has the skill but also the attitude to win at the highest levels: usga.org/content/usga/h…

On this day 113 years ago — Aug. 13, 1912 — Ben Hogan was born. Among his many accomplishments (64 PGA Tour wins, career Grand Slam, 4 U.S. Open championships) one of the most remarkable is that from 1940 through 1960 he never finished out of the top-10 in the U.S. Open.
