“Perhaps unsurprisingly, we could find no example of any other country abolishing its main public health institution in the middle of the covid-19 pandemic”, says Lord Ara report on NHS England go.wilmingtonplc.com/index.php/emai… via Health Service Journal

Co-chair of the APPG on Access to Justice Willy Bach welcomes us all to today’s Access to Justice meeting, with a warm welcome to new Minister for legal aid Heidi Alexander (she/they) and a moment or two to celebrate Simon Mullings and all that he did for Access to justice.

Calling Statutory Maternity Pay 'excessive' is mind-blowing when it's less than half the rate of the national minimum wage. 🤯 A recent survey by Maternity Action and UNISON shows a quarter of women on maternity leave went without food to feed their families.

Kudos to Guardian Money for fact checking Badenoch’s claims about ‘excessive’ mat pay. The Maternity Action survey clearly shows the impact of low rates of maternity pay, with women forced to return to work before they have recovered from the birth. theguardian.com/money/2024/sep…

Working on maternity leave, borrowing from family, going into debt. Great piece in The Times and The Sunday Times on how women manage on the UK’s obscenely low statutory maternity pay. thetimes.com/article/616be4…

Delighted to see genuine redundancy protection for pregnant women and new mothers in the Employment Bill. First recommended by @Commonswomequ in 2016; repeated commitments given by the then Government; private members bill by Maria_Miller. Important protection, long overdue.
