Stand with us - University staff to strike nationwide | Tertiary Education Union – Te Hautū Kahurangi o Aotearoa teu.ac.nz/news/universit…

Tertiary Education Union have advised that unis are offering casuals 0% pay increases in some roles, despite operating surpluses and COL increases. Casualisation and low wages are a systemic problem that require govt action. In the meantime, we urge casuals across Aotearoa to support this action.

Most interesting thing about strikes in NZ is how you get told it's illegal to have them outside of collective bargaining. Guess what else is supposed to be illegal: not paying casually employed people properly. If only that happened as infrequently as these bargaining periods.

Shout out to all casual students and graduates on the picket line today. Some were offered as little as 0% in the middle of a COL crisis. Also big mihi to Chris Hipkins for re-neging on postgrad student allowance. Thanks for enabling the exploitation of desperate people.

I fully support the #TEUonSTRIKE action being taken around Aotearoa today, but would like to see far more attention being given to postgrads and short-term contract workers in universities, who are suffering far more than those of us on permanent contracts.

Framing from AUSA is a little myopic. Tutors are usually students. Further, experienced tutors are abandoning academic careers due to precarity; inability to make ends meet. Rather best to implore uni managers to do the right thing than suggest unions scale it back.

A point lost on many. You can go around in circles criticizing your local VC and forget that nearly all the issues are structural and nearly all can be addressed through reform of the sector.

Delighted that that Chlöe Swarbrick cited the Precarious Academic Work report in Parliament yesterday, and encouraged that Chris Hipkins is open to the possibility for much needed systemic change in universities ondemand.parliament.nz/parliament-tv-…

Dodging the issue of the sector funding reform in the name of Universities' autonomy is not good enough Chris Hipkins. This is not the way we build "a stronger, fairer education system"New Zealand Labour

Since early January, my team and I consulted with over 20 RSE workers in Northland and over 60 workers in Marlborough and visited eight accommodation sites to inquire into RSE workers’ work and living conditions. * Disclaimer: Some details may be distressing. #Thread #RSEscheme

Another humiliating defeat for AUT in the Employment Court. This is why causal roles are so appealing to our universities; the academic precariat is nothing more disposable trash. We need reform. We need universities that are community-centered sites of learning and research.

Unis advertising entry-level perm positions and wanting candidates to have dozens of pubs, grant funding and an established service record are effectively saying they only want people who never had to pull pints to make ends meet and had parents paying their tuition fees
