‘People with mental health problems are weak’. No we are not. People with mental health problems are some of the most resilient & strongest people you’ll ever meet. The amount of strength that is required to deal with the symptoms & the stigma is enormous.

Out now: experimental study on blaming in political protest discourse with Sten Hansson | @stenhansson.bsky.social and Ruth Page. We develop and test a model of how the linguistic framing of political protest posts influences the spread of blame on social media. doi.org/10.1177/009365…

Our theory suggests that the way we express why someone (e.g. a politician) is at fault and whether we're criticizing their character, behavior or the outcomes of their actions influences how strongly other people perceive the criticism and whether they're likely to repost it.

However, there's an intriguing twist! Our study uncovers a "retweetability paradox": contrary to earlier studies and conventional wisdom, messages perceived as more critical are NOT more likely to be reposted, but the opposite is true.
