Great phonebanking session at The Labour Party HQ for Karen Shore in the Runcorn by-election. Voters drawn to her record of delivery and rejection of populism and easy answers. Going to be tight tonight given incumbency but cannot fault activists, party and candidate 🌹

The NHS app, complete with health app store, live and on-demand GP bookings, AI doctor etc could become a new front door to healthcare in Britain. And it’s smart politics - not beyond the realms of possibility that 40m voters download and use it by next election. ā€œFeltā€ delivery.

Under leadership of Matt Clifford & Ilan Gur, ARIA is fast becoming a status-quo breaker - both in the solution it’s creating and the way it’s run as a public institution. Lots to learn in this essay šŸ‘‡

Our new paper The Sovereignty Test reframes the story. Deeper UK–EU coordination isn’t about Europe. It’s about power. The ability to control our borders. To secure our energy. To shape our defence posture. To protect our democracy.

I think today’s deal will be a big deal and a very important step forward to getting Britain on a sustainable path to recovery and a better future - a lot of speculation about two things that will upset different groups It will be the start of a better relationship with a huge..

There’s a spectrum of governing that runs from response to leadership. Too often govts respond to what they think (or polls tell them) people want. This is leadership. Moving the country from a regressive politics to a better future. That wins votes. We could even be bolder…

Me for LabourList this morning on how Labour can tell a new story about Europe. It sets out a practical path forward based on a sober reading of power: how it moves, who shapes it, and what happens to countries that fall out of its current.

Digital ID is a social justice issue. Why do we live in a country where we can’t quickly means test benefits, making sure those who need them, get them? Benefits either insanely expensive (furlough) or don’t reach those in need. DigID pulls our data into one place to solve that.

Voters aren’t extreme, but they’ll turn to extremes if mainstream politics can’t deliver basics like border control. A delivery unit that mobilises tech (e.g. NHS app) can make change felt. Great to chat with Matt Chorley Michelle Clement on BBC Radio 5 Live.

Liverpool was joyous today. My daughter’s first football moment. We were all celebrating in the street, together. That someone would see an opportunity to inflict pain is beyond comprehension. My heart and hope goes out to those who have been hurt. Just devastating.

Years of political mismanagement later and we’ve forgotten how government can transform public services and ultimately make lives better. Nice reminder tonight from Michelle Clement. ā€˜The Art of Delivery’ is a must read, packed with wisdom from Sir Michael Barber’s unpublished diaries.

Charge rates for victim-based offences halved between 2015 and 2024. That Jenrick video is like watching an arsonist walk around telling people how to put out fires.

We must spend more on defence. But debate cannot become fixated on % of GDP or we miss important issues: how we build a pan-European defence industry, how we spur & scale innovation, how we improve adoption (see this excellent, grounded-in-experience piece from Fred Thomas MP)
