Please sign with your support to help influence the City of Edmonton to re-fund this lifesaving service, otherwise it’s gone next week! win.newmode.net/climatejustice…

Catastrophic evidence that our city needs harm-reduction supports more than ever. Sign and share this petition. It's not too late for Amarjeet Sohi and the rest of our city council to show courage and bravely save this program's City of Edmonton funding win.newmode.net/climatejustice…

In the two months after EPS began its new scorched earth encampment policy with help from the UCP and the City on Jan 17, frostbite diagnoses almost doubled and frostbite amputations almost tripled among unhoused Edmontonians compared to the same period in 2023. #abpoli #yegcc

More evidence the government's narrative does not align with what actually happens during encampment evictions. This does not create or sustain trust. How much more proof do our leaders need to understand that the carceral response to houselessness is not the answer?

From talking with people who experienced encampment evictions since January, frontline community service workers and volunteers, and experts, I have little doubt that the EPS’ new scorched earth encampment policy contributed to the spike in frostbite numbers.

The Navigation Centre did little to mitigate these harms. It does nothing to improve safety in shelters. It does nothing to reduce housing waiting lists. And while some evictees were initially willing to try it, their willingness decreased over time. edmontonjournal.com/news/local-new…

But while the EPS and UCP hide their cruelty behind the friendly face of the Navigation Centre, the true philosophy behind their encampment response is revealed in this email from Deputy Chief Driechel: to make life on the streets “less desirable”.

"resolve" = the destruction of personal belongings and the severing of supportive relationships. The vast resources of the settler-state are used to make life "less desirable" for houseless Edmontonians, the majority of whom are Indigenous.

We know the results of the punitive response to houselessness in our city. Let's save one of our last harm-reduction programs before it's too late. Sign, share, and talk to your municipal councillor! win.newmode.net/climatejustice…

New from me: the EPS’ scorched earth response to encampments has been futile and cruel. #abpoli #yegcc edmontonjournal.com/opinion/column…

In the first half of 2024, there were as many encampment evictions as in all of 2023. Meanwhile, the number of houseless Edmontonians has gone up 40% from the start of 2024. The punitive response to houselessness is costly and harmful in myriad ways. And it is an abject failure.
