Pony Penning began in 1926, but it was Misty of Chincoteague that drew the world’s attention. Author Marguerite Henry visited in the 1940s and turned local ponies and people into beloved characters, making the island famous for more than just its seafood.

My grandparents retired to Chincoteague in 1961, buying a 1920 house with no plumbing—just a pump and an outhouse. They fixed it up themselves. As a child, I was captivated by the salt air, the wide waters, fishing, and the ponies. Chincoteague became a favorite place.

In March 1962, a massive storm flooded all of Chincoteague. Many ponies perished, and the chicken industry was destroyed. This photo from The Washington Star shows Main Street underwater—except for my grandfather’s house, one of the few that stayed dry.

Since 2013, my family and I have gathered at Chincoteague every year for Pony Penning. One of our favorite parts is going at dawn to watch the Saltwater Cowboys bring the northern herd down the beach. They'll collect them in pens prior to Wednesday's swim.

Chincoteague Island people are resilient. After the 1962 storm, they rebuilt their homes and businesses. Soon tourism became a major new industry. The highlight of the summer, though, was always Pony Penning. #PonyPenning100
