Asad Rahim has brilliantly recounted the history of the assaults on democracy in Pakistan since the beginning by placing the committed life of educationist Dr Mahmud Husain in the midst of the intrigues of the 1950s & 60s. After 78 years we remain stuck at the beginning, still.

The state was taken over in the 1950s by unelected forces that were meant to serve the state. Decades later things remains unchanged: assault on democracy is being justified by the oppressors & large parts of the intellectual elite using old nonsense.

Consider three positions that history has condemned again & again. (1) It is said that present oppression and fraud will give birth to structural changes that will cause economic prosperity. Instead elite interests have become more entrenched. People have become footnotes.

(2) Throughout our history unelected forces that have usurped state power have found support among large swathes of those who claim to be progressive. The dissolution of the assembly in 1954 was hailed by these intellectuals & Tamizudin mocked.

Tacit and overt support for those suppressing democracy & human rights is fraudulently justified by denigrating the people. The people are sometimes painted as ignorant simpletons or as proto-fascists won over by populism. The people’s agency is denied.

(3)There are some who look away from present horrors by describing these as intra-elite power struggles in a class based polity _ hence of no importance for the people. Bubble Gramscians hold forth on the need for a people’s politics while ignoring the people’s actual defiance.

Resistance becomes a duty when people are being abducted, judges harassed, elections looted. Let’s keep our vision uncluttered. No economic development that keeps the people out will amount to much: schools will remain wretched, children stunted. Democracy is about human dignity.

Military trials of civilians are a human rights violation. The torture to which those convicted are being subjected poses a challenge for our society at large. These are human beings, not just PTI supporters. The silence of the human rights community is deafening.
