New work with Sammy Westfall : DOGE tweeted, POTUS amplified, BJP lapped up and MEA claimed ā€œrelevant departments and agencies are looking intoā€ the $21-million-for-voter-turnout-in-India allegation. But we found it to be false. (1/5) wapo.st/412Ylhy

Three people aware of aid programs in the broader region expressed their bewilderment at the accusation. It did not add up because such a program has never existed for India. One person told us DOGE ā€œconflated numbers from other programsā€ to arrive at the $21 M figure. (2/5)

So, why did this error occur? Department of Government Efficiency , President Donald J. Trump and State Dept. are yet to explain. But the damage may already be done in India with government supporters (including India’s Vice President) and TV anchors calling for investigations and FCRA crackdowns on NGOs & civil society. (5/5)

My latest, with Hannah Natanson: The Trump administration is rolling back programs that were created to assist more than 250,000 Afghans with planned resettlement in the United States. washingtonpost.com/world/2025/07/…

Today in The Washington Post we published a portion of the known names of 18,500+ Gazan children killed in the war, in Arabic and English. We could only fit 18% of the names on these 2 pages – it would have taken 5 more pages to list them all:

I have never seen a newspaper font as tiny as what the Washington Post had to use today to list only a fraction of the 18,500 children killed in Gaza on two pages of the paper. You need a magnifying glass to read it. An overwhelming sight.

A powerful project by The Post analyzing the list of more than 18,500 children killed in Gaza, and fleshing out their names, ages and in some cases how they died and how they lived

For those in DC, pick up a copy of the print The Washington Post, where we have published a portion of the known names of the 18,500+ children killed so far in Gaza

The words ā€œkilled before first birthdayā€ appear more than 900 times in this list. Children killed playing or sleeping. Children who should have grown up. Israel is starving and bombing Gaza. And the U.S. is complicit because we're sending those bombs and not demanding more aid.
