Had I been working a regular job, I would've made more money and saved for retirement, but my life would have been entirely about work and a stressful family life, I wouldn't have enjoyed my 20s at all. I'd probably be quite sick from it all now.

The advice that you should spend your 20s "exploring" before grad school only applies to people with the economic and social privileges necessary for exploration. Sometimes grad school provides those privileges, sometimes not. Everyone's situation is different.

Ever since I ended up in an academic department with actually supportive senior colleagues who give great feedback, I am disturbed by the culture of lowkey bullying grad students and junior scholars as “feedback.” No wonder everyone has imposter syndrome. 😭

Watching the lived experience of my people and other racially/ethnically minoritized be devalued constantly is really hard & this is why I really wasn’t sure I was even going to stay into academia up until May of this year. It’s bigger than this for us.
