Women make up the majority of the public sector workforce who have suffered over a decade of decline in their real wages. This is therefore a continued refusal on by the Government to value women's work and address an underlying cause UK's #GenderPayGap theguardian.com/society/2023/j…

Warnings of a “wage-price spiral” in the public sector are largely a distraction. There’s no prices in the public sector: higher wages for midwives wouldn’t change the ‘price’ of having a child in an NHS hospital. (More here ifs.org.uk/articles/what-…)

Disappointing to see Keir Starmer say that The Labour Party would keep the two-child benefit limit. The policy has not only further impoverished families, it also makes no economic sense. A 🧵on why it's not effective & should be abolished: wbg.org.uk/analysis/the-t…

3/ It's more expensive: The societal costs of child poverty is estimated at £39bn/year. There are ~4.2m children in poverty in the UK. Just lifting 250k children out of poverty could save £2.3bn in future societal costs – nearly twice as much as it would cost to remove the policy

9/ 📢📢What we need is a feminist approach to tackling inflation. If you want to find out more how that would look like in practice, read our new briefing on gender and monetary policy out today: wbg.org.uk/analysis/gende…

6 million children across the UK are now impacted. This means that 1 in 9 children live in a family whose benefit payments are reduced as a result of this policy. #EndChildPoverty

This is such an important point that is being missed by the media. So good to see pressure building on the two child limit, but we can't forget about the benefit cap!

Dr Sara Reis (@sararsreis) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Women having children benefits society - they're our future nurses, social care workers, taxpayers. So costs of raising them should be more fairly spread if we want to encourage higher birth rates. Policies that punish large families - 2-child benefit, benefit cap - should end.

Women's Budget Group (@womensbudgetgrp) 's Twitter Profile Photo

If we lift 250,000 children out of poverty by removing the two-child limit, we could expect savings of £2.3bn in the long run – nearly twice as much as removing this harmful policy would cost.

Women's Budget Group (@womensbudgetgrp) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Roughly half of this (£1.15bn) would be savings in public expenditure right now and less pressure on schools, NHS and local councils. Keeping the two-child limit is therefore not only deepening poverty and cementing inequalities, it is also a false economy.

It's beyond frustrating to see the Bank of England continuing to blame inflation on pay rises for workers, particularly when the message from employers contradicts this so clearly. If the Bank really believed pay rises were driving inflation...

We have said again and again: Removing the 2-child limit is the most effective single measure the government can take right now to address child poverty. With all the evidence we have on the harm it is causing, it is indefensible to keep it in place. theguardian.com/politics/artic…
