Great fun seeing Dr Dr Rachael Lappan sampling atmospheric microbes for HFSP project that commenced this week. Challenge is to get enough microbial cells while minimising contamination. I left, she put a clean suit, and she thoroughly decontaminated when sampling started for real!

I am delighted that thanks to the hard work of Kevin X. Zhong and co-authors, our manuscript on using free rRNA to infer taxon-specific microbial mortality rdcu.be/cW9e3 is published in The ISME Journal.

Sharing our most important biochemistry article to date. So much here: basis of a global biogeochemical cycle; an enzyme that extracts energy from air; an oxygen insensitive H2 catalyst; a crazy tunnel; and the highest res cryo-EM enzyme structure to date biorxiv.org/cgi/content/sh…

Applications are still open for our Underground Explorers Program. If you want to help sample the Earth's mycorrhizal communities, apply by October 31. We prioritize projects in under-sampled regions, led by local applicants. spun.earth/expeditions/ap…

New PNAS paper published. In terms of direct value for the real world, this is probably my most important paper so far. Work with Alexey Ryabov, Bernd Blasius, Irina Olenina, and Helmut Hillebrand. doi.org/10.1073/pnas.2…

Sometimes a paper takes 6 years, 75 days at sea, 900 metagenomes (700 in this paper), two new coding languages, and many fantastic collaborators. I am very proud of this one. ❤️ nature.com/articles/s4139…

I didn’t realise, when I started working as a psychologist with children and families, how many stories I would hear about distress relating to school. School-related distress wasn’t really something that came up in my clinical training. 1/

I've been asked "how can you be so productive if you have ADHD". I respond "ADHD often helps". It was mainly a disability growing up, but now I can harness it to be creative, energetic, supportive and hyperfocused. Interesting work and calm supportive workplace critical though./1
