Democratic engagement in PA continues to be solid. Now with a 6.1 point lead statewide in mail ballot returns. This is happening within counties, too, so it isn't just that the Dem counties sent out mail ballots earlier election.lab.ufl.edu/early-vote/202…

Many of you know about my search for a "missing in action" relative. The DPAA just announced the remains of 2nd Lt. Thomas V. Kelly, Jr., have been positively ID'd. Thanks to the work of Project Recover and so many others, my relative is no longer MIA. wapo.st/4fBfZPS

January 6 was an attempted coup. The Cline Center is a nonpartisan and nonadvocacy research center dedicated to documenting conflict events around the world, and has been documenting coups and attempted coups since 2013 using standard definitions. This was one of them.

I'm honored to be leading the Cline Center team in living out the legacy that Dick and Carole Cline created for us. Our long-term time horizon for advancing human flourishing couldn't have taken root without their generous endowment that continues to orient our ongoing work.

A really well-done paper that supports our findings (2018 JoC): local newspaper closures increase polarization because people turn to national news. Great to see evidence from other countries and political systems.

With the latest update to our Coup d'État dataset, we've revisited our very first recorded event: a successful military coup in Brazil, 1945, shortly after the end of WWII. Learn more from this video: buff.ly/42zEHw4

I am not much on X, but for those interested, I am launching "Civic Fields." It is meant to be an outpost on the internet that tries to pull attention from the news cycle to more basic questions about political and civic life. This week's post: civicfields.org/p/the-rooting?…

Bees are dying at unprecedented rates but few Americans are aware of the problem. A 2021 Cline Center study explains why--there has been little news of pollinator declines since at least the late 1970s. Read it here: pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pn… cbsnews.com/news/bee-death…

🧵Between 1945 and 2024, coup attempts occurred in 140 countries. Over time, there has been a noticeable decline in the overall frequency of such attempts. However, an intriguing pattern emerges when examining the percentage of coups that successfully led to regime changes.⏬

Interesting new paper in Nature Human Behaviour. The authors conclude that variation in fatal police shooting rates across agencies is "far from random" and "primarily associated with...differences in crime rates, 911 call rates, officers per capita and the prevalence of guns."

And with the FBI’s National Use of Force Database probably never seeing the light of day, that leaves us with Mapping Police Violence as the only database providing near-real time information on police killings in the United States.
