January 6 was an attempted coup. The Cline Center is a nonpartisan and nonadvocacy research center dedicated to documenting conflict events around the world, and has been documenting coups and attempted coups since 2013 using standard definitions. This was one of them.

I'm honored to be leading the Cline Center team in living out the legacy that Dick and Carole Cline created for us. Our long-term time horizon for advancing human flourishing couldn't have taken root without their generous endowment that continues to orient our ongoing work.

Interesting new paper in Nature Human Behaviour. The authors conclude that variation in fatal police shooting rates across agencies is "far from random" and "primarily associated with...differences in crime rates, 911 call rates, officers per capita and the prevalence of guns."
