Hunga volcano's eruption in 2022 was the largest recorded instrumentally & had widespread impacts. Shortly after the eruption, Tonga's only subsea telecommunication cable was damaged - cutting a whole nation off from digital communications at a critical time.

Coring for paleo eruption deposits from past Hunga eruptions in Tonga - we found the tephra units at ~AD 1150 and AD 200 again - but the record seems to go back longer

Elbow grease got us to around 3 m depth / in a previous attempt I got to 1.25 m (1500 yrs BP) - many unknown tephras in the deeper core - can’t wait to get them on the probe!
