In an event of historic meaning that one wildlife biologist describes as 'mindblowing,' nesting eagles are again raising their young near Onondaga Lake, of sacred meaning to #Haudenosaunee. My Central Current column with images by legendary #MikeGreenlar: centralcurrent.org/sean-kirst-at-…

For months, legendary #UpstateAmerica photographer Mike Greenlar has joined group of photographers closely following nesting eagles, raising their young near Onondaga Lake - stunning event at place sacred to Haudenosaunee. My Central Current column, with Mike’s beautiful images:

I was saddened to write this story on the death of John Spears, director of the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library. As a journalist, I spoke with John many times, in good times and bad. He filled every conversation with insight, thoughtfulness and humor. buffalonews.com/news/local/art…

For months, Mike Greenlar - a legendary CNY photographer - joined group of peers following two Onondaga Lake eagle hatchlings in nest, sibling lost in storm. For my Central Current column, Mike captured this triumphant early flight by young eagle, almost ready to be on its own:

A giant couch - familiar piece of street art in Syracuse - will be moved before long make way for #I81 teardown. But its creator is using this summer for one last statement at old spot. My Central Current column with images by great Michelle Gabel: centralcurrent.org/sean-kirst-art…

Nineteen years after installation of giant couch in desolate area, surrounded by interstates, artist Angelo Puccia’s steel sculpture will be moved for #i81 construction in Syracuse - but not before he transforms it into memorial for 2 officers shot to death in Salina. My column:

The other day, as sculptor Angelo Puccia worked on restoring giant ā€˜couch’ - his longtime street art welcome in shadow of interstates - man living on streets told Puccia how he often sleeps on sculpture. He wanted to help with project: Puccia, deeply moved, hired him on the spot.

Angelo Puccia: Using paint and passion to transform his giant steel couch - created as a symbol of whimsy and welcome, 19 years ago - into a statement of civic love, gratitude and tribute … for two officers who died in service to community, to too many children lost to violence.

Fifty years ago today, TIME Magazine covered it when Rev. Betty Bone Schiess celebrated Eucharist in Syracuse - but predicted her strategy would hurt women’s efforts in church. Thousands of women priests and bishops later, Bone Schiess strategy seems pretty wise. My column:

Everyday small world stuff in Syracuse. Went to Grace Episcopal last night for 50th year remembrance of Rev. Betty Bone Schiess’ first Eucharist, as groundbreaking priest. Turn around during sign of peace to see former city councilor Mike Atkins - 76 now, Grace member for life.
