Reality check on AD biomarkers from Carole Dufouil at DPUK conf In MEMENTO, minimal variability of BBMs explained by clinical factors. And BBMs add little predictive ability beyond standard demographic/neuropsych tests What happens when outcome = people instead of PET scans!

What is the prognostic capacity of plasma p-tau217 in cognitively unimpaired patients? Research in Alzheimer’s & Dementia reports plasma p-tau217 is a prognostic marker for identifying individuals who will develop cognitive impairment within ten years. alz-journals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.10…

This is not a good example of trustworthy science communication. And The Lancet Neurology should not have published a paper stating that the effect size was "not statistically significant but is clinically meaningful". See full response here: sciencemediacentre.org/expert-reactio…

Systematic review of MCI prognosis from Simone Salemme and co, nicely showing selection bias arising from clinical samples - population-based samples show almost half the conversion rate and more than double the rate of reversion to normal cognition alz-journals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.10…

Shingles vaccination programme in Wales appears to be associated with reduction in dementia risk. Healthcare records aren't a perfect way of capturing dementia incidence but this is a potentially important finding rdcu.be/egagG

In this Chinese population-based sample, we found that health behaviours were more strongly linked to living longer without getting dementia, compared to APOE e4 genotype. Though we didn't see any compression of the dementia morbidity (once it occurred) doi.org/10.1002/alz.70…

In population-based study (Kungsholmen), NPVs high but PPVs for blood based biomarkers 30% for single biomarkers, 45% for combination. Median follow-up 10 years. Just can't see how screening could ever be feasible with these kinds of values nature.com/articles/s4159…

V important paper from Sarah Assad and team on external validity of cognitive assessment studies. Non-response in cognitive studies is not random - people not taking part are older, have lower cognition, and reduced functioning. Must weight analyses! alz-journals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.10…

A couple of months ago in The BMJ (I’m that far behind!). This is something we should care about. We need a medical workforce that is diverse and who can relate to patients and others in the MDT.
