Ahhhhh, feels like I’m back in the 3rd world, nothing like the “well maintained” Devon roads! Officials wonder why people in the countryside need SUV’s and 4x4’s…. 🤦‍♂️

Winter Wheat at Branscombe, #Devon starting to motor, LG Rebellion booting, others (Extase, Arnie, Equippe) not far behind. No #YellowRust anywhere, even Claire untreated, all looking pretty clean, Astronomer and Skyscraper least clean of untreated.

To roll or not to roll? No doubt this will be answered as the season progresses. Herbicide effectiveness, plant growth, moisture retention, standing at harvest, hopefully all will be answered by harvest of the 25 varieties planted. #Maize25

Maize coming along nicely in Lincolnshire, starch increasing daily in the strong sunshine. Maize is going to be the best gross margin crop this year.

In a ‘normal year’ these range from a FAO 130 at top, a 200 mid and a 190 bottom. Not a lot in it this year though at my trial site near Sidmouth #Devon. Maize harvest has started on dry ground near Exeter, this is nearly 6 weeks earlier than last year. #Maize25

How is it I can have a crystal clear phone call to a mate in Ruaha River Lodge, Tanzania, but try speaking to someone in a field in Lincolnshire is like talking to someone on another planet there is that much lag, interferrence, or they sound like they’re underwater? 🤔

I have never seen ground in England this dry before, let alone Dartmoor! The much promised band of rain being forecast last night ended up being as much as a heavy dew….. 🤦‍♂️

It’s been a very busy week looking at maize trials and demos all over the place, highlight was seeing this monster working near Grantham. Thanks to Sarah and Tom for their time and for hosting us again.
