I got a TT job (not my current one) bc I randomly sat beside the right person, then a stranger, in the audience for an MLA panel. A lot else went right too, but if I hadn’t sat there, I wouldn’t have gotten the job. Wish it weren’t so chancy, but that’s not just academia!
